Increased Economic Activity in Ballymun

Following an extensive communications strategy by the Economic Development Department, to highlight the increased level of economic opportunities in the area, has resulted in various news articles within Local and National media. This has culminated in a RTE 6:01 News documentary highlighting the extensive range of opportunity available in the Ballymun area (see link below) and various news articles within National and local papers.

The Waiting for IKEA is over, the international corporation opened its doors to the public on Monday 27th July 2009. Through the work of the Economic Development Department a range of supports were offered to aid local people in training and applying for tendering opportunities with IKEA. As a result a number of local sole traders who collaborated their expertise were successful in winning two out of three Kitchen Installation contracts.

In addition to this the Retail Incubation Initiative, partnering the Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership and the Ballymun Shopping Centre, is not only enabling local start-up businesses to take their first steps in leasing their first premise, but has also provided a significant increase in the level of footfall and additional business within the centre. Although this project is at a tentative stage it is hoped that as more businesses open, many more consumers from the area will return and support employment and business activities in the Ballymun area.

These additional economic activities within Ballymun, particularly IKEA, have enabled an increase in the level of consumers coming into the area from surrounding towns and now counties. This is a great turning point for Ballymun. It is hoped that with the increased focus on the area, and additional consumer spend coming in that there will be further demand for businesses within the new Ballymun.

If you are currently own and operate a business and you think that there are opportunities for you in the Ballymun and the North County Dublin area please do not hesitate to contact myself Gerard Mc Loughlin at the Partnership offices 01 8423612 or gerard@ballymun.org
