Supporting Parents Support their Childrens Development

The parent communication tool Supporting Parents is Supporting Children DVD was launched by Roisin Shortall T.D on October 13th 2008 at the start of National Parents week by in the Ballymun Partnership. The event was attended by local parents, voluntary and statutory agencies. Roisin Shortall complimented the efforts of the Ballymun Partnership to bring agencies together to support local parents. Following her recommendations the Ballymun Partnership provided the resources to purchase additional copies and distribute to a greater number of local parents. The event was supported by Anne Keating Director of the Ballymun Womens Resource Centre who also represented the Ballymun Partnership board on the day. The aim of the launch was to promote local events during National Parents Week.

Getting it Right for Families

National Parents Week began in Ballymun with a talk by Tony Bates, CEO Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health hosted by the Ballymun Partnership based on the theme Getting it Right for Families. Dr. Bates highlighted a variety of stressors that can compromise both family functioning and childrens development. He emphasized coping strategies that can be used by individuals and families. He also stressed the importance of agencies such as the partnership and their ability to assist develop the availability of social support and social support networks.

During National Parents Week services such as CAFTA (Community And Family Training Agency) Solas and the Star project hosted a viewing of the Supporting Parents is Supporting Children DVD with groups of parents attending their services. 30 local services hosted a viewing of the DVD which was seen by over 350 local parents.

There is more support than I thought for parents in Ballymun. Good DVD. Enjoyed it a lot. Parent - CAFTA
